Computers are now made affordable and more compact. Most devices being produced nowadays fit into the mobile and fast-paced lifestyle of each American man or woman. Laptops and other computers are made more faster, they are also made with great capabilities and features, and best of all, they are made way cheaper than old computer who were sold at very high prices.

All these things make upgrading more of a necessity than a privilege. But while the upgrading process, there is always one question that lingers: what do you do with your old computer?

There are a handful of states in North America that does not allow electronic gadgets to be thrown away into the trash can because these electronics comprise toxic components which can be harmful to the environment. You then have to take it to the right place, like a recycling facility, where it can be recycled and not naturally dumped into other places. Based from very recent statistics, two million tons of electronic devices are being dumped each year from old computers to handhelds, cell phones, digital cameras and more. If you are a "green" advocate, this is does not paint a very beautiful picture so here are some suggestions on what you can do to recycle your old computer or at least, dispose of it properly:

1. Some equipment manufacturers have taken the initiative to take care of your "electronic disposal dilemma." There are assorted manufacturers who would take back your old computer units when you buy new units. It would be very helpful if you would check first if the computer that you are going to buy your new unit from has a distinct "give back" schedule or initiative so you won't have to deal with the pressure of disposing the unit yourself when the time comes.

2. Charities are also good venues for your old computers to be still put into use. There are a lot of organizations who would gladly accept your old computers as long as it is functioning for donation to assorted charities nationwide. You just have to erase every data in your hard drive and make sure to wipe it clean because if not, you will be exposing yourself in serious danger of identity theft.

3. Base sense will tell you that before you dispose of your computer, cell phone and other electronic devices, you need to take a consolidate of steps before they are properly discarded. Foremost, of course, is to delete all pertinent personal information that are saved in your hard drive like username, passwords, prestige card information and more. All traces of data in your computer should be removed from the drive and you can do so by whether downloading hard drive wiping software or destroying the hard drive physically. It is very prominent that hard drives be wiped clean because if you're going to have it donated, it may end up in "skilled hands" which will then make you very vulnerable to identity theft.
